Support To Children

We offer consistent and comprehensive support to children and by extension their parents/carers who are affected by social, emotional or mental health needs in a safe therapeutic setting; through talking, creativity and play.

Psychotherapy Clinical Placements at Unlocking Potential provide the opportunity to make a real, meaningful difference to the lives of disadvantaged and vulnerable children and families.

Our Locations

Our clinical placements are based in primary schools across London: Brent, Camden, Hackney, Havering, Lambeth, Lewisham, Southwark, Tower Hamlets, Wandsworth and Westminster.

Our placements offer you:

  • a supportive working environment from the moment you apply to the end of your placement.
  • a year-long, structured placement in a primary school for 12 months or more.
  • All clinical hours accumulated on placement are counted towards course accreditation.
  • Full or half day placements during term time only: First year students usually start with 2 clients, this can be built up to 3-4 clients, depending on commitment and on a case-by-case basis. A student seeing 2 clients is expected to commit to half a day in school e.g 9:00 am- 12:00 pm. A student seeing 3 or more clients is expected to be available for a full school day 9:00 am-3:30 pm.
  • A supportive structure: Each clinical session is 50 minutes; students are expected to stay on site after their sessions to log session notes on the UP database and to be available to meet with teachers and parents, as required.
  • Initially access to low-mid complexity, increasing with student’s competency: we work with children and families from a variety of backgrounds. Students are matched with clients who present with low-mid complex needs, that are determined through our assessment process. Issues can vary from: bereavement and loss, low self-esteem, social/emotional/behavioural difficulties.  As students’ clinical competencies develop, they may be invited to take on more complex cases, always with guidance from their clinical supervisor.
  • On-site Placement Management: in each school there is a Therapy Team manager (TTM) who runs the service in the primary school and remains the students’ first point of contact throughout their placement experience. Each TTM is a qualified therapist and provides on-site support and guidance on matters concerning referrals, assessments, safeguarding and parent meetings.
  • In-house Clinical Supervision: we offer fortnightly 1:1 50 min clinical supervision, held remotely on zoom, providing further flexibility for our students.
  • A dedicated, fully equipped Therapy Room: each school has a dedicated therapy room where interventions are held, confidentially. This room is fully equipped with art materials, puppets, sand trays and miniatures, and has scheduled, consistent therapy session slots.

Potential future career opportunities at UP: we are always seeking to develop the next generation of UP Therapy Team Managers and Complex Case Therapists, and invite any keen trainees who exhibit the qualities and skills required for the roles to apply during our recruitment drives at various times of the year.

What our trainees say:

Facts item image

“UP has been the most supportive placement experience to date, I am grateful for the thoughtful care that is put into the entire experience from interview, assessed workshop to the actual placement in school. I have found that all the training I have received has made me feel less anxious and well prepared for clinical work.”

“The experience of being in a well-supported placement like UP is invaluable in becoming more able to understand the theoretical groundwork that has been done and enabling the growth of one’s personal practice. The placement has been an essential part of my training which brought the learning to life.”

“Thank you for the great experience I have had over the past year. It has been such an enjoyable learning process and I have gained a great deal from my placement, for my future work as a therapist.”

Application Process and Contact information:

  1. Application Form – Please download and complete the clinical placement application form and email to our Psychotherapy Placements Lead: Lisa O’Connell at lisa.oconnell@up.org.uk
  2. Interview – Upon a successful application, students are invited to an hour-long interview, facilitated by 2 members of UP staff.
  3. Assessed Workshop and Safeguarding Training – Following a successful interview, students are invited to a day-long in-person workshop. The workshop provides vital safeguarding information and prepares students for their placements, as well as assesses their level of training and experience in order to determine the complexity of the cases they are ready to work with through creative/experiential activities. At this stage we perform DBS checks.
  4. Online Database, Evaluation Tool and Safeguarding Training – After the assessed workshop, students are asked to attend a 3-hour long, online workshop, aimed at teaching and preparing students for measuring and recording data on placement, as well as fulfilling their safeguarding responsibilities.
  5. Online specialist training – Before beginning their placement, students are required  to complete further online safeguarding  and GDPR training to ensure safe and effective  practice.
  6. Final placement decision – Placements are offered to applicants successful in all the above. The Psychotherapy Clinical Placements Lead decides on the most appropriate placement based on location, school’s needs, student’s needs, and capabilities. A clinical supervisor is also allocated at this stage. The Clinical Placement Lead will send an email to the TTM with all relevant information and guidance on next steps, to instigate a schools-based induction between student and TTM.
